Also known as the Pidurangala Viharaya, the Rock Temple is located a few kilometres away from the Sigiriya Rock Fortress. The temple which is located on the massive rock structure of Pidurangala is also a preferred hiking trail among tourists and locals alike. Going back to the first and second century BC, the temple was used as a Buddhist Monastery with five main ritual buildings including the Ancient stupa, chapter house, image house, preaching hall and inscriptions with drip-ledged caves.

Hiking up to the summit of the Pidurangala rock has become a much favoured activity while its location adjacent to the Lion Rock offers magnificent views while the sunrise and vistas beyond Sigiriya are truly memorable. The entrance fee to the Rock Temple in Pidurangala is a part of the donation towards the temple while the hike takes about 30 - 45 minutes depending on how fit you are.
